The icebergs in Scoresby Sund in East Greenland are formed by the many glaciers that flow into the sound and its side fjords. The fjord system cuts approximately 100 km inland. It can therefore take months for an iceberg from one of the glaciers to leave the sound and drift out into the open sea.
Larger icebergs that drift into Rødefjord, one of the side fjords, usually end up in the “iceberg graveyard.” This is a shallow area near the island of Røde Ø, where they become stuck on the fjord floor. They are not released until they have melted to a certain extent.
